چکیده

Rhyolitic obsidians from Krafla volcano, Iceland, record the interaction between mobile hydrous species liberated during crystal growth and the reduction of ferric iron in the silicate melt. We performed synchrotron μ-FTIR and μ-XANES measurements along a transect extending from a spherulite into optically distinct colorless and brown glass zones. Measurements show that the colorless glass is enriched in OH groups and depleted in ferric iron, while the brown glass shows the opposite relationship. The color shift between brown and clear glass is sharp, suggesting that the colorless glass zone was produced by a redox front that originated from the spherulite margin and moved through surrounding melt during crystallization. We conclude that the most likely reducing agent is hydrogen, produced by magnetite crystallization within the spherulite. The Krafla obsidians dramatically capture redox disequilibrium on the micoscale and highlight the importance of hydrous fluid liberation and late-stage crystallization to the redox signature of glassy lavas.

Effect of Preparation Methods on Crystallization Behavior and Tensile Strength of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Membranes

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were prepared by non solvent induced phase separation (NIPS), melt spinning and the solution-cast method. The effect of preparation methods with different membrane formation mechanisms on crystallization behavior and tensile strength of PVDF membranes was investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) and ...

Derivation of intermediate to silicic magma from the basalt analyzed at the Vega 2 landing site, Venus

Geochemical modeling using the basalt composition analyzed at the Vega 2 landing site indicates that intermediate to silicic liquids can be generated by fractional crystallization and equilibrium partial melting. Fractional crystallization modeling using variable pressures (0.01 GPa to 0.5 GPa) and relative oxidation states (FMQ 0 and FMQ -1) of either a wet (H2O = 0.5 wt%) or dry (H2O = 0 wt%)...

Oxygen Fugacity of the Martian Mantle from Pyroxene/melt Partitoning of Ree

Introduction: This study is part of an ongoing effort [1-3] to calibrate the pyroxene/melt REE oxybarometer for conditions relevant to the martian meteorites. Redox variations have been reported among the shergottites [4-6]. Wadhwa [4] used the Eu and Gd augite/melt partitioning experiments of [7], designed for the LEW86010 angrite, to infer a range of fo2 for the shergottites. [5,6] inferred f...

Chemical patterns of erupting silicic magmas and their influence on the amount of degassing during ascent

We present a chemical model of magma degassing based on nine volatile species part of S-O-H-C-Fe-bearing rhyolitic melts. It is based on equilibrium, closed-system degassing, and does not take in account the crystallization of mineral phases. For given initial conditions at depth, the model calculates the gas composition as pressure decreases, as well as physical variables controlling conduit f...
